If you’ve driven through the Mill Street and McCarran intersection in Reno recently, you may have noticed a new structure tilted up at Park at McCarran. Our site crews recently finished tilting one of the industrial buildings, marking the completion of a major milestone for the project. Superintendent Chuck Brown oversaw the progress onsite and ensured the tilt-up commenced safely and efficiently. Site crews at Swope Middle School continue to quickly hit major construction milestones, especially in regards to the new two-story classroom building.

“We are thrilled to be about a quarter of the way through with the final phase of the expansions and renovations at Swope,” said Casey Gunther, Operations Manager for United Construction. “Our team has been using the dry weather this winter to their advantage and making great progress, so students and staff can start making more use of their new facilities.”

Site crews have completed the concrete masonry unit walls for the new two-story classroom building and scaffolding has been removed. Structural steel, including roof beams and columns, and second-floor concrete slabs are also complete, and exterior grid insulation and steel stud framing is currently underway. United Construction and crews are working after school hours on mechanical, plumbing and electrical upgrades within the current classroom building.

The new library will be housed within the new classroom building. While construction is underway, students are still utilizing the temporary library set up in the activity room of the new gym.

Inside the new kitchen, walls have been painted, and the epoxy floor is in. The facilities are close to completion and will soon be ready for use.

Please note that neighbors will continue to see increased truck traffic as site work continues throughout the school year. Be advised that safety and road controls will always be put in place whenever needed. United Construction will continue to update neighbors with current construction information.

Work on the grounds of the planned 664,000-square-foot inventory facility in North Las Vegas continues onwards into the new year, reaching new milestones and exciting moves. According to Superintendent Colton Brock, crews have 150,000 yards of export remaining out of their 430,000-yard operation, with under-slab utilities set to be installed at the end of February. Concrete is also on the horizon soon.

Towards the end of last year, crews also commenced rock blasting to quickly and cost-effectively remove rock from the site, which helped them immensely with an efficient mass grading process.

Colton happily reported, “It’s nice to have seen this progress during and after the lengthy grading portion of this project!”

United Construction is happily now on display in the rink at the Jennifer M. O’Neal Community Ice Arena (commonly known as “Reno Ice”) – and right next the Reno Ice Raiders Hockey Club, no less! We are the proud builders of Reno Ice, and of course, proud supporters of the NHL-regulation arena and their first semipro adult hockey team.

The Reno Ice Raiders are a semipro Senior A hockey team that relocated to Reno from Northern California this fall. They wasted no time at all and quickly moved to our NHL-regulation arena when it was complete – an exciting milestone!

As we kick off 2022, we are going full steam ahead with our renovations and expansions to Swope Middle School.

“We are anticipating great progress at Swope continuing to shape up throughout 2022,” said Casey Gunther, Operations Manager for United Construction. “We’d like to thank all our partners, as well as the surrounding neighborhood, for coming along on this journey with us and celebrating the milestones thus far.”

In regards to the new two-story classroom building (pictured above), structural steel erection has started. As a reminder, the building will be the new home for a resource center, math and science classrooms, technology lab, new teachers’ lounge and workspace, social science and language classrooms, a group room for various activities and a hub space.

Site crews have begun HVAC demo and replacement in the attic space within the existing school. Mechanical, plumbing and electrical upgrades are also progressing well within the current school grounds. This work will continue through the end of summer.

The remodeled and expanded kitchen is almost complete, and crews are gearing up for the facilities being ready to use by staff in the coming months.

Crew members are prepared for further winter weather in case more snow is forecasted throughout the season. Safety continues to be a top priority for United Construction and subcontractors.

Progress is moving full steam ahead at the Park at McCarran project site, located on the corner of Mill Street and McCarran Blvd in Reno. Crews recently commenced the project’s very first concrete slab pour, and more progress is quickly and efficiently afoot. The two-building design-build project will total more than 350,000 square feet of industrial space upon completion.

While the month of December has brought the Swope Middle School construction team rapidly-changing weather, crews are still on track to deliver key milestones on time for the students and staff. With continual snowfall, United Construction and our subcontractors remain committed to safety.

“Safety is of utmost importance to our entire team, and with snow affecting our line of work, safety is especially at the forefront,” said Casey Gunther, Operations Manager for United Construction. “We take no shortcuts and always ensure everyone onsite practices the highest quality safety measures, especially in extreme weather.”

Crews are almost complete with masonry walls for the new two-story classroom building. Scaffolding went vertical this month as well, which you can see depicted in the picture above. Additionally, the structural steel erection will start during the first part of January.

Mechanical, plumbing and electrical upgrades for the existing classrooms continue onwards. The team is working on an afternoon swing shift after school hours with a focus on replacing the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system.

Site crews completed early morning concrete pours at the beginning of this month. We will ensure neighbors are made aware of any future early morning concrete work at the school.

It’s the holiday season, and we would like to take this opportunity recognize all of the hard work our crews and partners are doing at Swope Middle School.

“As we pass Thanksgiving and continue into the December holidays, we are thankful for our employees as well as our subcontractors and Washoe County School District partners for all they have done for the students and staff,” said Casey Gunther, Operations Manager for United Construction. “All of the incredible milestones we have hit thus far are a testament to the talent and dedication of the entire team.”

The two-story classroom building will go vertical this month with masonry and structural steel. This means that the shell of the building will start to become visible by the Swope community. When finished, the building will house a new resource center, math and science classrooms, a technology lab, a new teachers’ lounge and workspace, social science and language classrooms, a group room for various activities, a new library and a hub space.

In regards to the existing classrooms, mechanical, plumbing and electrical upgrades are under way. This work will continue from now through the summer of 2022.

Early morning concrete slab pours plan to be wrapped up this week. Site crews commenced pours in the morning to reduce the amount of disruptions for staff and students during school hours, as well as prevent traffic jams at peak driving times and preserve the quality of the project.

The Ambassador Program is gearing up to start soon. As a part of the program, students can expect visits from industry professionals who will speak to them about several aspects of the construction industry, including contracting, architecture, design, engineering and more.

Site crews are making swift milestones at Swope Middle School, as students and staff begin to experience school life in the brand new facilities.

“We are excited to see the student body taking advantage of the new buildings,” said Casey Gunther, Operations Manager for United Construction. “From the sports games inside the gym to the concrete walls rising in the kitchen, our work is taking shape quickly, and it’s evident in all of the expansions and renovations thus far.”

Workers continue to make progress at the site of the two-story classroom building, digging out and replacing soil and completing the installation of the underground utilities. Concrete slab pours have begun and will commence in the early morning, and footings will soon be installed; both will continue throughout the season. This building will also hold the new-and-improved school library. In the interim, students are making use of a temporary library that is set up in the activity room of the new gymnasium.

Also within the gym, the new court hosted its first event towards the beginning of the month – a student basketball game. The players enjoyed the modernized basketball hoops and revamped scoreboard, while the audience cheered from the new bleacher seats.

Swope neighbors and families will be pleased to know that students will continue to learn without interruption; crews will continue using sound blankets when needed to block out major construction noise.

Coming up, students at the school will be able to learn about the construction going on right around them. As a part of a newly-created Ambassador Program, industry professionals will visit the students and speak to them all about contracting, architecture, design, engineering and more.

This Fall will welcome swift and notable progress at Swope Middle School, as both expansions and new construction continue to go smoothly and efficiently.

“With the new season comes new milestones at Swope,” said Casey Gunther, Operations Manager for United Construction. “Students and staff will be excited to learn that several facilities will be ready to use in the coming weeks, including the new gym. We look forward to even more progress as Fall continues on.”

Site crews have completed excavations at the location of the new two-story classroom building. Workers continue to make progress as the underground utilities are near completion. When finished, the building will house a new resource center, math and science classrooms, a technology lab, a new teachers’ lounge and workspace, social science and language classrooms, a group room for various activities and a hub space.

The remodel and expansion of the kitchen facilities are progressing and making great headway. Additionally, the new gymnasium will be ready for games at the beginning of October, where students can enjoy the revamped basketball hoops, volleyball courts and a scoreboard. The new fitness center will also be ready to use soon.

More concrete slabs will be poured at various locations throughout the month of October. Setting of concrete masonry unit (CMU) block walls will follow directly after the pours are complete and will continue until the end of the calendar year.
